Why the shape of the incision counts.

A U-shaped channel pushes tissue aside and takes up more room. A V-shaped channel follows the natural shape of the follicle, so grafts can sit closer together with less trauma between them.

What the data shows

Weniger Schaden at the follicle.

A comparative study of 200 FUE procedures measured the rate of damaged follicles: 1.8% with sapphire blades, against 5.6% with steel and 3.2% with microneedles. A prospective observational study of 1,000 patients reported a survival rate of 94.7%, compared with 88.9% for steel.

Some context matters here: there are as yet no randomised controlled trials isolating blade material as the only variable. The biggest single factor remains the hand holding the instrument, not the instrument itself. That is precisely why Dr Rosenthal performs every procedure personally.

Frequently asked questions

What patients ask first.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and is virtually pain-free. The exceptionally fine sapphire blades keep tissue trauma to a minimum, which also markedly reduces discomfort afterwards.

The difference lies in how the recipient channels are opened, extraction is identical in both. Sapphire blades make finer, V-shaped incisions rather than the U-shaped openings left by steel. That means less swelling, faster healing, and the ability to place grafts closer together and at a more natural angle.

Not necessarily. The unshaven method leaves your covering hair in place, so the procedure goes unnoticed day to day. For larger areas, shaving can make more medical sense, since it allows greater density per session and a shorter procedure. We settle this at the consultation.

The transplanted hairs shed over the first few weeks, an entirely normal process. First growth appears at around three to four months, and the final result at about twelve.
